Alzheimer’s Memory Walk

Posted in City Adventures at 9:58 am by shawnitalea

Last weekend Andrea and I joined the team from ResCare HomeCare to help support the Alzheimer’s Association Memory Walk in Portland, OR.  Alzheimer’s is a disease that has affected my family and one that I have seen a lot of during my time as a caregiver so I was glad to help bring awareness to the disease.  There are still some walks going on in the state of Oregon next month and there is also the option to participate virtually if you wanted to help out as well!

School starting

Posted in City Adventures, Family, school at 3:46 pm by shawnitalea

I started my online classes today, I will be very busy and most likely very quiet here.  Well, not that that will be much of a change over the last six months.  But here are a few pics of what I have been up to lately.

Thank you

Posted in City Adventures, Family at 10:20 am by shawnitalea

I was reading through all of my blog posts from when I started this blog and was getting a little down on myself.  I was feeling that I had been moving backwards in my life since I have moved to Portland.  Do you ever have those days where you questions the decisions that you have made? And wonder how you got to where you from where you were.  Yup, it has been one of those days.  I think that it started last night when I was getting quarters to do some laundry at my apartment.  I was remembering that not too long ago I had my own washer and dryer in my own laundry room.  I think that I was only remembering the good things about my marriage and the home.  I wasn’t remembering all of the negative aspects (which I really won’t go into, this is not the place).  At times like these I am so thankful for my best friends and my family.  Oh, I can’t forget my dog Mac has been so very helpful since he has come to live with me in Portland.  So, I would just like to thank you all!

Screen Door and Porch Swing Lemonade

Posted in City Adventures at 2:57 pm by shawnitalea

The girls and I were finally able to get all three of us together after what seemed like months without seeing eachother…ok it was really only two weeks at the most but STILL.  With all of our crazy summer schedules we were able to fit in a great dinner at Screen Door after I got home from a fire assignment, Heidi got home from a family reunion and before Andrea flew out of town for 10 days.  We had some great food! If you ever have an opprotunity to eat at Screen Door, do!  Here is a sneak peak at our appitizer and cocktail.  Hush Puppies and Porch Swing Lemonade.  Yum!

Wow! I promised a more detailed blog about the trip to Europe and now I have so many more things to report upon.  So, I think that the Europe post will have to wait.  Once I got home I have pretty much gone somewhere every weekend.  Here is a quick review in pictures.

We had girls camping weekend at the Oregon Coast:

And then there was my birthday weekend:

The next weekend I went to visit my family in Joseph and got my dog:
Mac

And finally last weekend Andrea and I went to Leavenworth to see a friends band play at the opening of a new beer garden. The Michael Carlos Band performed at the grand opening of Der Hinterhof…great music and a great atmosphere!

9 days!

Posted in City Adventures at 7:01 pm by shawnitalea

9 days and I will be on plane on my way to England! Just saying…I am excited.  Anna has some great times planned for us…it will be a great week!

This last Friday Heidi and I went to a great restaurant that we have been trying to get to for the last month.  It is called Screen Door (45th and East Burnside).  The service was great and the food was amazing as well.  They serve Southern Comfort food and that it is.  Heidi had fried chicken, mashed potatoes and collard greens while I had jambalaya.  The weather was just right so we could sit outside on the patio.  If you get a chance you should try it.

Saturday Market on Sunday

Posted in City Adventures at 12:54 pm by shawnitalea

I made it to the Saturday Market on Sunday this week.  There was a painting that has been stuck in my head for the last few weeks since I went to the market the last time.  I think that it will be perfect in my kitchen, and I just keep going back to this painting.  The painting was still there and I visited it again, and am still thinking about it.  It seems that I am being a little indecisive about this piece of art.  Saturday Market is a very interesting place, it is not like anything that I have ever been to before.  I was trying to think of something to compare the Market to and nothing was coming to mind.  The amount of creativity that is there is amazing, so many people who can create some amazing things with their hands and their imagination.  This vendor that I took a picture of looked to me like he should be on the streets of Paris with his cart full of prints.  I am not sure if this was because of the colors that he chose or if it was the bike.

That is Skidmore Fountain in the background of the photo, a Portland landmark that has an interesting history.  If you look on Wikipedia it says that on the dedication of the fountain in 1888 the Weinhards offered to pump beer into the fountain.  And of course since it was on the Internet then it is true ;)   Ok, I really don’t know how true that statement is, but it would be an interesting idea to have a beer fountain in the middle of what is now Saturday Market.

Little McKay Creek

Little McKay Creek
Last night I saw Little McKay Creek live at Dukes in Gresham. They are a band from Pendleton, Oregon that I have heard numerous times. It was like a little bit of home came to the city to visit. They have a new CD out called Remember, great music and dedicated to a great man.

The Shoes Say it All

As I was unpacking my room this afternoon my shoes got grouped together before going into the closet.  I thought that this array of shoes was pretty funny, from my fire boots to the heels that I wear to the office.  I have all the boxes unpacked and the house is mostly organized.  Which means that I can enjoy this great weather that we are going to be having in the next couple of days.

I have been knitting on my thermal sweater, I have a little over an inch left before I switch it up for the arms.  Not sure if I will be getting much knitting done with the 70+ degree weather, I am looking forward to going for a hike tomorrow.

New place and new bruises

Posted in City Adventures at 9:53 pm by shawnitalea

In the last two days I have moved 4.8 miles up the road to a great little two bedroom apartment.  But, I also had to run to Walla Walla, WA to get the rest of my belongings that would not fit in the old place.  So 4.8 miles turned in a whirlwind trip across the great state of Oregon with a quick jaunt into Washington.  Somehow in all of this moving I managed to give myself large bruises on each extremity of my body, I tend to use my body to push and manhandle boxes and furniture to where I want them to go instead of muscles.  I think this is a practice that most women use when moving, not that I have done a study on this.  But I have moved quite a bit and observed men and women.

It was nice to make a quick stop into the Walla Walla Ranger District Office and see some friendly faces.  Although I was told to “have a great life” when I left by one of my favorite people.  I will be back to visit my friends and family in Walla Walla, I will not be leaving you forever friends.  Hoping to get some pictures of my sweater project up in the next couple of days…been slightly preoccupied with the move and packing this last week.
